Postgame Recap:  Hawks Bring Back a Win

Road Win Moves Waterloo to Second

A three-goal third period was the difference in the Waterloo Black Hawks’ 5-2 victory over the Fargo Force at Scheels Arena on Saturday night.

The three-goal margin was the largest for either club in the regular season series between the teams.  The big finish provided the Hawks with four wins in six tries against the Force during 2018/19.

The game was tied 2-2 at 3:28 of the third when all eyes turned to Brehdan Engum.  The Black Hawks defenseman drew everyone’s attention when he stepped into the left circle and moved below the faceoff dot.  From there, he slung a pass to Griffin Ness near the top of the crease; Ness knocked the feed into a wide open side for the go-ahead – and ultimately game-winning – score.

Joe Cassetti added to the lead at 14:37.  Emil Ohrvall swooped behind the Fargo net and dropped a pass back to Cassetti coming up the slot.  Cassetti rifled it past Ryan Bischel to establish the first multigoal lead of the game for either team.  He followed up with his second goal of the night, into an open net from the blue line with 1:16 left to go.

Waterloo had gone ahead initially 11:52 into the first period.  It was the first instance in which Ohrvall swiped the puck behind the Force goal.  On that occasion, he moved to the top of the crease, and with a quick flick of the wrist, he slung a backhander through Bischel’s pads.  However, the Force struck to tie it with just 2.4 seconds remaining in the period.  Ben Meyers capitalized from the slot on a pass out of the left corner by Hank Crone.

The teams exchanged the lead again in the second period.  Fargo took their only lead at 4:20 when Aaron Huglen turned to find a rebound beside him and swatted it into the net.  Wyatt Schingoethe answered in transition, weaving up the ice and holding onto the disk long enough for traffic to form around the crease.  Schingoethe’s shot from the left circle hashmark beat a screened Bischel.

The Black Hawks return to eastern Iowa for a pair of games next weekend, beginning with a visit to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Friday.  The same teams meet for a return engagement at Young Arena on Saturday.
