Tied Tight Headed to Closing Weeks

Artem Ivanyuzhenkov recorded the only successful conversion during a three-round shootout Tuesday at Young Arena, and the Sioux Falls Stampede edged the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-4.

The result gives both teams identical 34-14-5-2 records and 75 points.  Tied for second place in the United States Hockey League’s Western Division, each club has seven games remaining.

Both sides led and both sides rallied in regulation.  Waterloo started well with an early James Marooney score 3:30 into the action, followed by an Emil Ohrvall power play goal at 10:36.
The Stampede narrowed the margin when Anthony Romano found the net with 6:12 left before intermission.

Prior to the break, the puck went between the pipes at both ends of the ice: a Hawks’ score came from Vladislav Firstov with 1:45 to play, but Sioux Falls was back within one again when Max Crozier answered seven seconds before the period ended.

The Stampede jumped to the lead in the second, thanks to a tally by Sam Stevens, then Romano’s second power play goal of the night, not quite three-and-a-half minutes later.

Waterloo’s Xander Lamppa forced overtime with a special teams conversion almost five minutes into the third period.
Alec Calvaruso made 30 saves to claim the win on a night when the visitors outshot the Hawks 49-34.  Evan Fear turned in 44 saves.

The Hawks play two of their final three road games this weekend, visiting the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Chicago Steel on Friday and Saturday respectively.
