The Waterloo Black Hawks’ 2019/20 schedule was revealed on Monday, highlighted by 30 home dates featuring traditional holidays, intense rivalries, and notable anniversaries.
Young Arena opened to the public for the first time on December 28, 1994, and the Waterloo Black Hawks played the first game in the building just over two weeks later on January 14, 1995. The 25th anniversary of both dates will be commemorated with home matchups this winter. On December 28th, the Hawks meet the Des Moines Buccaneers. Waterloo collides with the Tri-City Storm on January14th.
“Many people from all over hockey tell us there is no place like Young Arena,” said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “This building and the Black Hawks have been important parts of reshaping downtown Waterloo into the revived and still-growing area so many people enjoy today, and I hope many people will join our organization and the City of Waterloo in celebrating 25 years’ worth of great memories.”
The silver season of hockey on Commercial Street begins with the Black Hawks’ home opener on Saturday, October 12th versus Tri-City. Prior to that night, the Hawks will play their first official games of 2019/20 as part of the USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh during the final week of September, with specific dates and opponents to be announced later by the United States Hockey League.
Following the temporary withdrawal of the Central Illinois Flying Aces, the USHL will have 16 active member organizations in 2019/20. As a result, the Black Hawks will play at least one home and one road game against every league opponent, with a total of four games versus most Western Conference clubs.
The reshuffling of schedule details means Waterloo will see more of three primary rivals: the Des Moines Buccaneers, Dubuque Fighting Saints, and Cedar Rapids Roughriders. Each team will play eight games against the others (four home and four away). The Hawks have not played eight games in one season against Cedar Rapids or Dubuque since 2012/13 nor against Des Moines since 2008/09. Des Moines’ first visit of 2019/20 will be Saturday, October 19th, the RoughRiders’ initial appearance is Friday, November 22nd, followed by Dubuque the next night, Saturday, November 23rd.
After the home opener on October 12th, the new schedule is highlighted by several other notable nights at Young Arena, including:
• November 28th, Waterloo’s traditional Thanksgiving game versus Cedar Rapids
• December 31st, the Hawks close out 2019 hosting the Madison Capitols
• February 14th, the RoughRiders return for a Valentine’s Day tilt
• March 17th, Des Moines drops in for a St. Patrick’s Day feature
