Annual Watch List Provides Initial Grades

Six skaters with links to the Waterloo Black Hawks attracted interest from NHL Central Scouting Monday in that organization’s Preliminary Watch List of players who are eligible for the 2019 NHL Draft.
Ryder Rolston leads the group, which includes five forwards and one defenseman.  Rolston is in his first season with Waterloo after spending the last two years with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.  The Notre Dame recruit was given a “B” rating, suggesting that he is a candidate to be chosen during the second or third round of NHL picks next summer in Montreal.
Forwards Patrick Guzzo, Ondrej Psenicka, and Wyatt Schingoethe, plus defenseman Ethan Szmagaj, and affiliate forward Zach Michaelis were each assigned “C” status, indicating that they may be on track for selection in the fourth, fifth, or sixth round.  Central Scouting will update its preliminary list again during the first half of the season, followed by a midterm ranking of prospects in January, and a final table issued in April.
Schingoethe, Guzzo, and Szmagaj are each in their second full season with Waterloo.  A year ago, Schingoethe played in every game and tied for sixth in team scoring with 33 points.  Guzzo had six goals and ten assists in 54 appearances, with a +10 plus/minus differential.  Szmagaj was +15, tied for fifth among the 2018/19 Black Hawks, while also notching a goal and 16 assists on the blue line.
Psenicka is in his first season with the Hawks and has accounted for two goals in the first three games of the year after playing in Czech Republic last winter.
Michaelis was on the ice for nine regular season games and two playoff contests last season, recording a total of three points.  He is currently skating for the Minnesota Wilderness of the North American Hockey League.
The Black Hawks return to action Friday versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  Waterloo’s home opener is Saturday evening against the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 p.m., featuring $2 Coors Light for those 21 and older and magnetic schedules for all fans in attendance, presented by Cottonwood Canyon.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
