The Waterloo Black Hawks will recognize cancer survivors and raise money for patients battling the disease on November 15th and 16th during games at Young Arena against the Omaha Lancers.
Each year since 2006, the Hawks have promoted awareness, screening, and early detection, sponsored by Dr. Douglas Duven and the Breast Care Center. Since 2012, Cedar Valley Great Clips locations have sponsored the team’s annual cancer awareness jerseys. This year’s sweaters will be auctioned after the game on Saturday, the 16th. Profits from the auction and other fundraising activities will support Beyond Pink TEAM.
“Having our ‘Hockey Fights Cancer Weekend’ a little later will help us build on all of the great events and efforts that have been happening over the last several weeks related to breast cancer awareness,” said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “Cancer awareness and advocacy doesn’t begin or end in October, and I don’t think there is an organization which represents that better than Beyond Pink TEAM, with the great work that they do all year long on behalf of cancer patients in the Cedar Valley.
The TEAM acronym stands for Take action, Educate, Advocate, Make a difference. The group provides financial assistance for women with breast cancer treatment expenses, including assisting with medical bills, home or rent payments, car payments, and groceries. Beyond Pink TEAM also advocates for legislation which supports patients, collaborative research, and participation in clinical trials.
This season, the jersey concept is a straightforward lavender-and-silver design, featuring the Waterloo Black Hawks’ logo prominently on the front. Silver shoulder boards include a cancer awareness ribbon. Each sleeve includes purple numbers which match the jersey collar, while the larger player numbers on the back of the jersey are in silver, below player name plates in white.
Both Black Hawks matchups against the Lancers begin at 7:05 p.m.
