The Chicago Steel stayed just out of reach throughout Saturday’s game at Fox Valley Ice Arena, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-3.
Chicago became the first team this season to score a power play goal against the Hawks. With 33.1 seconds remaining before the first intermission, Tyler Carpenter tipped John Spetz’s shot from the right point. The puck found the net inside the post to the right of Logan Stein, giving the Steel the lead – by one count or another – for the rest of the night.
Spetz was on the business end of the next goal at 4:04 of the second. Brendan Brisson turned in the left corner and found Spetz coming on a change. Stepping into the right circle, Spetz snapped a wrist shot into the net.
Waterloo got one back at 7:13. In the closing seconds of a Chicago power play, a faceoff in the Steel zone led to the puck being shot off the end wall. It caromed back to the top of the crease, and just as the Hawks’ penalty ended, Patrick Guzzo slipped his chance into an open side.
Scoring picked up in the third, but the Hawks could never even the contest. Sam Colangelo scored in transition on a wrister from the right faceoff dot at 4:22. Dane Montomery brought Waterloo back within one on a quick passing play involving Griffin Ness and Jacob Jeannette less than a minute later.
Colangelo added his second of the period at 14:33, capitalizing when Brisson’s pass left him with an open side. Waterloo answered again – this time just over a minute later – on their only power play of the night. Ness banged in a chance from just outside the crease.
However, Owen Power sealed it with 1:01 remaining, picking up a rebound in his own zone and flipping it down ice into an empty net.
The Black Hawks’ play their third game in three days in a third different state on Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 3:05 p.m. when Waterloo visits the Madison Capitols.
