Postgame Recap: Hawks Finish with a Flourish

By WBH, 11/03/19, 6:00PM CST

Guzzo Has a Big Weekend

In the last moments of their third road game in three days, the Waterloo Black Hawks pulled out a 2-1 win against the Madison Capitols on Sunday at Capitol Ice Arena.

With overtime looking likely, Patrick Guzzo knocked down a puck at the red line.  He stepped into the Madison zone and snapped a wrist shot to the top corner for his third goal of the weekend.  Just five seconds remained when the puck went in.

Sunday’s win gave Waterloo a 1-1-1 record and three points for the weekend.

The Black Hawks had been turned away on four first period power plays, then another during the second.  However, just moments after that fifth advantage ended, Waterloo broke the scoreless deadlock.  With 2:37 remaining before the second intermission, Mason Reiners came up the right boards before cutting through the circle.  His feed across the top of the crease was banged in by Kyle Haskins at the opposite post.

However, a turnover in the defensive zone allowed the Capitols to tie the score before intermission.  Carson Bantle lifted his shot into the net, unassisted, from the right circle at 19:25.

That was the only chance which eluded Gabriel  Carriere, who made 18 saves for the win.

Waterloo remains on the road next weekend, meeting both of their Dupaco Cowbell Cup rivals.  The Hawks visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday.
