Penalty Shot is the Difference

A penalty shot conversion with 1:18 remaining in regulation Friday gave the Waterloo Black Hawks their only lead during a 3-2 road win at Mystique Ice Center against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Dane Montgomery was tripped on a shorthanded breakaway, leading to the attempt.  Since Montgomery was shaken up on the play, Wyatt Schingoethe took his place for the penalty shot attempt.  Moving to the net by way of the right circle, Schingoethe pulled the puck to his backhand at the last moment and beat Eric Portillo to the short side.

Waterloo ran out the remaining Dubuque power play time to secure the win and finish the night three-for-three on the penalty kill.

Gabriel Carriere made 31 saves for the decision, and had at least ten stops in each period.

After a scoreless first, Dubuque’s Dylan Jackson recorded two goals in the second to give the Saints a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.  His first tally came on a breakaway backhander at 1:17.  He found the net again at the 9:00 mark on a goalmouth scramble.  In between, Ryan Drkulec dented the net for Waterloo.  At 3:21, Drkulec’s shot hit a defender and eluded a screened Portillo.

Xander Lamppa tied the game at 2:19 of the third.  When the puck was flipped into the Dubuque zone, it took an awkward bounce and landed behind the Saints defense.  Lamppa pounded and lifted a quick shot over Portillo’s right shoulder from the left wing circle.

The Hawks complete a season-long six-game road trip on Saturday in Cedar Rapids against the RoughRiders.  Waterloo is 2-2-1 so far during the sequence.
