Lamppa Has Two

The Waterloo Black Hawks weren’t behind for long Friday during a 4-1 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers on the road at Buccaneer Arena.

Each team scored a first period goal, with all the offense in the first frame coming in a 16-second span.  Harrison Roy nudged the Bucs to the lead at 12:40, knocking a pass into an open side as Des Moines came up the rink in transition.

On the next shift, Xander Lamppa responded.  Nic Belpedio sent a shot from the left point wide of the net.  It came off the end wall to Lamppa, who put it in at the opposite post.

Waterloo took the lead at 8:41 of the second period.  All the action leading up to the goal was on right wing with Kyle Haskins and Connor Caponi making their way to the offensive end.  That left Wyatt Schingoethe wide open as he came streaking up the left side of the ice to lift a shot under the crossbar.  Waterloo built the margin to two goals at 10:25, when Lamppa slipped behind the Des Moines defense near the Bucs blue line.  When a pass came his way, it took him a moment to settle a rolling puck, but Lamppa slipped a low shot past Cameron Rowe to boost the Hawks to a 3-1 edge.

Ryder Rolston added one more goal early in the third.  With the Hawks on a power play, Griffin Ness and Ondrej Psenicka were each stopped in quick succession, but Rolston’s rebound try made it across the goal line at 1:05.  It was his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Gabriel Carriere made 26 saves for the win.

The Hawks wrap up their three-game holiday weekend at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. game against the RoughRiders.
