The Waterloo Black Hawks wrapped up a busy Thanksgiving week with a 1-0 win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday night at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Logan Stein made 30 saves for the shutout victory. Two nights earlier, he had blanked the RoughRiders with a 28-save performance at Young Arena. Stein now leads all USHL goalies with four shutouts in 2019/20.
Saturday’s win - following Thursday’s 4-0 decision and Friday’s favorable 4-1 result against the Des Moines Buccaneers - gives Waterloo the team’s first sequence of three wins during three consecutive days in nearly three years. The Hawks last achieved the feat in January of 2017.
Saturday’s matchup was scoreless, other than a goal in the final minute before the first intermission. Xander Lamppa had the puck in the right corner of the offensive zone; his diagonal pass back to the left point found Brehdan Engum. The defenseman was able to wind up for a slap shot and hit the top corner with 27.7 seconds to go.
Waterloo’s final home games before Christmas are next Friday and Saturday against the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 p.m. both nights. The Hawks will wear jerseys featuring the shark-toothed Flying Tiger P-40 fighter planes of World War II, which will be auctioned off following Saturday’s game to benefit Cedar Valley Honor Flight. The jerseys are sponsored by American Pattern and CNC Works. For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
