Postgame Recap: Hawks Get a Leg Up

By WBH, 01/03/20, 10:15PM CST

Three in the Third Enough

A couple of beneficial bounces helped the Waterloo Black Hawks swing past the Dubuque Fighting Saints for a 3-2 road win at Mystique Ice Center Friday.

Trailing 1-0 early in the third, Waterloo broke through on the power play at 2:35.  As the Hawks were changing, Xander Lamppa came up the ice and maneuvered to the side of the net.  Appearing as though he would step behind, he flipped the puck toward the crease at the last moment; it hit a defender’s leg and went in.

The Hawks went ahead in almost identical fashion five minutes later.  In that instance, Ryan Drkulec was coming from the other circle and attempting to complete a pass across the crease to Patrick Guzzo.  Instead, it went between the pipes off a Fighting Saint to boost Waterloo to their first lead.

A Dubuque power play conversion tied the game again at 9:46.  Braden Doyle eluded a shot block and put his attempt from the slot in off the crossbar.

Wyatt Schingoethe scored the game’s final and decisive goal at 11:10, recording Waterloo’s second special teams tally.  Griffin Ness had a shot blocked but recovered the puck in the right circle and handed it to Schingoethe.  His shot from near the faceoff dot went into the top opposite corner.

After being held to ten shots during each of the first two periods, Waterloo had 17 during the third and outshot the Saints 37-28 for the night.  Gabriel Carriere made 26 saves for the victory.

The Fighting Saints had scored the lone goal during the opening 40 minutes shortly before the first intermission.  Robert Cronin slipped into the Black Hawks’ zone on right wing and stepped through the circle; his pass across the slot connected with Thomas Middleton barreling up left wing.  Middleton scored into an open side at 16:02.

Waterloo and Dubuque meet for an instant rematch on Saturday at Young Arena.  The 7:05 game is on the Hawks’ annual Star Wars Night, featuring characters from the iconic film franchise.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit
