Postgame Recap: Saints Stop Hawks Streak

By WBH, 01/04/20, 10:00PM CST

Road Team Wins for the Fourth Time in the Series

The Dubuque Fighting Saints reeled off four straight goals twice on Saturday to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks 8-2 at Young Arena.

Waterloo entered the game on the upswing following six consecutive wins and victories in 11 of 12.  Those dozen games were played following another six-goal loss to the Saints, 7-1 on November 22nd.

The Saints pulled to a 4-0 lead by the first intermission on goals from Riese Gaber, Reggie Millette, Dylan Jackson, and Ty Jackson.  The Gaber and Dylan Jackson goals came on the power play.  Ty Jackson converted a penalty shot.

During the first 14 minutes of the second, the Hawks closed to within two.  A faceoff win helped Ryder Rolston get Waterloo started at 3:47.  With the puck coming to him off the draw, Rolston zinged a shot to the top corner.

Ryan Drkulec added the Hawks’ other goal at 13:53.  Aidan McCarthy appeared to stop Drkulec’s attempt from the high slot, but the puck went straight up, coming down to bounce off the Dubuque netminder and in.

Dubuque swung momentum back to their favor with 28.3 seconds remaining before the second intermission.  Ben Schultheis’ breakout pass caught Waterloo off-balance in the neutral zone and sprung Matt Kopperud for a breakaway goal.

Most of the third period was played with a 5-2 score until Mark Cheremeta, Ryan Beck, and Gaber added goals in the final six-and-a-half minutes of the third.

The Hawks now turn their focus toward the Tri-City Storm for three straight head-to-head games.  The teams meet in Kearney, Nebraska, next Friday.
