Hawks Win First of Three in Five Days

The Waterloo Black Hawks won their fifth overtime game in six tries this season, edging the Tri-City Storm 3-2 on Friday at Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska.

After being outshot 36-23 in regulation, Waterloo recorded the game-winner at 2:38 of the extra frame.  Xander Lamppa lifted the puck toward the net from the left circle.  With Patrick Guzzo at the front of the net, the chance eluded Ryan Ouellette and trickled across the goal line.

Gabriel Carriere put the Hawks in position to push the game to overtime for the win.  He made a season-high 36 saves, including 17 in a scoreless third period.  The result was Carriere’s 13th win of the season.

Guzzo had opened the scoring at 7:52 of the first period.  Positioned beside the Storm net, he squeezed a shot between Ouellette and the post at 7:52.  The lead lasted a little less than four minutes before Colby Ambrosio slipped in an opportunity from close range.

Waterloo had the lead again for approximately four minutes during the second period.  At 15:24, Griffin Ness swiped the puck behind the Storm goal and came around to the edge of the crease.  With Joe Cassetti at the opposite post and Ouellette forced to defend against either a possible shot or pass, Ness beat him to the short side.

However, Chase McLane blasted a power play one-timer into the net with three seconds left in the period to send the game to intermission tied at 2-2.

Waterloo and Tri-City meet again Saturday evening at Viaero Center.  Tuesday, the teams will square off at Young Arena for their third consecutive head-to-head contest.  For tickets to Tuesday’s game, click here.
