Montgomery Scores for the Second Straight Game

With goals in every period Saturday, the Dubuque Fighting Saints steadily built an insurmountable lead at Mystique Ice Center, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-1.

The Hawks had a 15-6 shots edge in the first period, but the Saints had a 1-0 lead at intermission.  Riese Gaber recorded the only goal of the period at 5:21, scoring from the slot on an attempt that beat Logan Stein to the glove side.

A miscommunication in the neutral zone left a lane for Stephen Halliday to dash to the net and score at 1:16 of the second.  Waterloo left a path open on left wing; Halliday gained the offensive zone and scored from the circle.  The Saints made it 3-0 five-and-a-half minutes later; Dylan Jackson was being knocked to the ice but still connected with Antonio Venuto who flipped in his shot.

Robert Cronin added a fourth Dubuque goal at 6:31 of the third.  A feed which wasn’t intended for Cronin was deflected and found him in the slot, and he was able to get enough on an attempt to put it inside the post.

Dane Montgomery spoiled Erik Portillo’s shutout bid with just under 10 minutes remaining.  Ryan Drkulec swiped the puck in the defensive zone and sprung Montgomery up the rink one-on-one.  Montgomery kept his balance while stepping around an attempted hip check by Braden Doyle to beat Portillo under the crossbar.

Waterloo outshot Dubuque in every period, including 15-8 in the third, but Portillo made 38 saves for the win.

The Hawks are back on home ice Friday against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.  The 7:05 p.m. game features the Domino’s Family-4-Pack ticket order, including four attack zone tickets, four soft drinks, four chuck-a-pucks, and a large, one-topping Domino’s Pizza.  To order, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
