Hurricanes Sign Former Black Hawk and his Brother

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed former Waterloo Black Hawks forward David Cotton to a two-year contract, the NHL club announced on Tuesday.

Cotton’s older brother, Jason, also agreed to a deal with the Hurricanes.  The two contracts were revealed together.

Carolina selected Cotton during the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.  That autumn, he came to Waterloo and recorded 15 goals and 15 assists in 48 appearances.  Cotton tied as Waterloo’s third-leading goal-scorer and ranked seventh in point production (30) on the team.  No Black Hawks player was a bigger threat on the power play; Cotton scored seven special teams goals.

For the past four seasons, Cotton has been a member of the Boston College Eagles, missing just two games in that time.  Despite his senior year being cut short by concerns about the COVID-19 virus, which led to the cancelation of the Hockey East and NCAA Tournaments, the 22-year-old captain had already accumulated a college career-high 39 points (15 goals, 24 assists) this winter.  Last season, he led the Eagles in goals (24) and points (36) while earning accolades as a Second Team All-American.  All totaled during his NCAA career, Cotton scored 57 goals with 70 assists in 148 games.

Cotton is one of two Black Hawks to be chosen by Carolina during the NHL Draft; Jack Drury joined him in owning that distinction in 2018.  Carolina’s other connection to the Black Hawks is through defenseman Andrew Alberts, who spent much of 2009/10 with the Hurricanes as part of his nine-year career in the NHL.

Three of Cotton’s Black Hawks teammates are currently playing professional hockey on NHL contracts: Mikey Anderson (L.A. Kings), Shane Bowers (Colorado Avalanche), and Ryan Lohin (Tampa Bay Lightning).  Anderson made his NHL debut last month and is one of 10 Waterloo alumni to play in an NHL game during 2019/20.

Updates on Black Hawks alumni are presented by Karen’s Print Rite.
