Joins Growing Group of ECAC Defensemen

Waterloo Black Hawks veteran defenseman Nic Belpedio will play college hockey for the Colgate Raiders after completing his United States Hockey League career, the Hawks announced Monday.

The suburban Chicago native opened his third USHL season on November 13th and 14th when Waterloo’s schedule began with a pair of games against the Sioux City Musketeers.  The trip to Sioux City produced a split result, with Belpedio recording an even plus/minus differential and two shots on goal.

“Obviously, players are dealing with a lot of unknowns and uncertainties in 2020, so welcome news like this is great to receive,” said Black Hawks President and Head Coach P.K. O’Handley.  “We’re looking forward to Nic making an impact in Waterloo as part of a veteran group of defensemen.”

In 2019/20, Belpedio played in 47 of the Black Hawks’ 49 games.  He recorded his first USHL goal during a home game against the Youngstown Phantoms on February 21st.  During Waterloo’s prior game on February 15th, Belpedio had tallied a pair of assists, one of two multipoint games to his credit as a Black Hawk.  He finished the season with nine points (one goal, eight assists).  As a member of the Muskegon Lumberjacks in 2018/19, Belpedio had 10 assists in 48 games and a +14 plus/minus differential.

The Black Hawks have not had any alumni skate for Colgate during the current century.  However, two of Belpedio’s current blue line teammates are committed to a rival ECAC program: Jonah Copre and Nick Wallace both plan to attend Quinnipiac.
