It has been an uneven start to the college hockey season.  Some teams were able to pack their November schedules, while others only dipped the toe of their sticks into the new campaign.  Many have yet to play a game at all this year.  Whether they had several chances to take the ice or just a few, today we look back on Waterloo’s top NCAA alumni from last month.

#3 – Garrett Metcalf
Long Island Sharks • Goalie

The new program at Long Island has played two varsity hockey games and Metcalf has been in net for both of them.  That includes the Sharks’ 3-2 overtime win during their debut game on the road at Holy Cross on November 19th.  Metcalf made 39 saves that night.  He stopped 41 shots when the teams met for a rematch a few days later, although Long Island fell, 5-2.  Metcalf transferred to Long Island this season after previously playing for Mercyhurst.  He also picked up one win early in his college career during limited action as a freshman at Massachusetts-Lowell.

#2 – Grant Gabriele
Ohio State Buckeyes • Defense

Following an 0-3 start, Ohio State’s first win during 2020/21 came against Michigan State, 4-2 on Sunday.  Gabriele scored during a power play midway through the third period, and after the Spartans answered just a couple of minutes later, Gabriele’s score proved to be the game-winner.  The senior had also scored the night before during a 3-2 overtime loss.  So far this season, he is one of just two Buckeyes with multiple goals.  Gabriele now has seven goals at the collegiate level and is already halfway to matching the four he tallied as a junior.

#1 – Robbie Beydoun
Wisconsin Badgers • Goalie

The Badgers have been one of the NCAA’s busiest teams, and Beydoun has been right in the thick of it.  After transferring from Michigan Tech during the offseason, the Plymouth, Michigan, native has already played in eight games as a Badger, including a 25-save shutout during his debut versus Notre Dame on November 13th.  Among other highlights, Beydoun produced 49 saves ten days later during a 6-3 conference win versus Penn State.  All totaled to this point, he is 4-3-0 in eight appearances for Wisconsin with a 3.04 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.
