The Sioux Falls Stampede scratched out Friday’s only goal early in the third period to edge the Waterloo Black Hawks 1-0 at Young Arena.
Dan Russell produced the decisive tally at 1:54. Waiting in the slot, Russell watched as Luke Weilandt brought the puck out of the right corner for a chance from close range. Jack Williams made the save, but Russell pounced to score on the rebound from just outside the crease.
Stampede goalie Trent Burnham stopped all of the Hawks' chances for a 25-save shutout. His best effort came in the latter minutes of the third when Wyatt Schingoethe clicked with Casey Severo on a diagonal pass down and through the slot. Burnham lunged from right to left to make a clean glove save on Severo’s chance.
Williams took the loss despite 26 saves. He made 15 of those in the second period to keep the game scoreless into the third.
The Black Hawks continue their weekend action when they visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. matchup as part of the Dupaco Cowbell Cup Series.
