Ozar Scores Two as Hawks Fall

The Dubuque Fighting Saints scored three times during a 2:45 span in the first period on Saturday, and the sequence proved nearly decisive during a 5-3 result against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Mystique Ice Center.

After an icing call against the Hawks, the Saints opened their account at 6:37, when P.J. Fletcher pulled the faceoff back to Ian Pierce, who scored on a shot through traffic from the right point.  Fletcher scored on his next shift at 7:50, moving unchallenged through the right circle to lift his attempt past Jack Williams from the edge of the crease.  Dubuque’s early onslaught continued 32 seconds later when Robert Cronin knocked in the rebound of an initial try as it bounded to him in the slot.

Owen Ozar broke Dubuque’s momentum at 9:28.  Moving up right wing in transition, he picked the top corner of the net over goaltender Aidan McCarthy’s opposite shoulder.

The score was unchanged during the second period as the Hawks killed off three Dubuque power plays.

When Waterloo went to an advantage of their own early in the third, they capitalized at the 41 second mark.  Casey Severo sent a pass from behind the Dubuque net to Ozar, who found the target again with another high shot.

However, Cronin’s second goal of the night four minutes later helped the Saints pull away once more; Cronin capitalized when his centering feed bounced back his way, leaving him with an open side.  Max Montes added a shorthanded goal on a breakaway during a Waterloo power play at 6:58, extending Dubuque’s lead to three.

John Waldron produced the final goal of the night for the Hawks at 16:14, scoring as he turned at the inside edge of the left circle, putting his shot in off the crossbar.

Waterloo outshot Dubuque 30-27, but 27 saves by McCarthy produced the Saints’ first victory of the season.  Williams and Charlie Glockner combined to stop 22 of 27 shots.

The Hawks return home against the Green Bay Gamblers Friday at 7:05 p.m.
