Hawks Stay on the Road Saturday

The Dubuque Fighting Saints pulled to a 5-0 lead Friday at Mystique Ice Center before dousing the Waterloo Black Hawks’ comeback hopes in a 7-4 decision.

Waterloo twice worked back to a two-goal deficit, but the Saints stayed successfully out of reach.

Dubuque’s four-goal first period began with Connor Kurth’s close-range power play conversion at 3:41.  Braden Doyle and Matt Savoie added goals separated by 18 seconds at 14:09 and 14:27 respectively.  The lead became 4-0 with 30.7 left before intermission when Robert Cronin raced behind the Waterloo net to set up Ryan Alexander at the top of the crease.

Less than a minute out of intermission, Savoie’s scored his second of the night in transition to extend Dubuque’s lead to its largest margin.

David Gucciardi produced his second goal in as many games to cue a Black Hawks rally.  At 6:11, he fired in a power play chance on Wyatt Schingoethe’s setup.  Just 14 seconds later, Michael LaStarza scored from just outside the crease, putting a shot under the crossbar.

The comeback peaked at 14:38 when Jonah Copre jumped into a rush and snapped in a try from between the circles.  Then for the third time in the game, one goal followed another within less than a minute, and this time, Cronin’s score from the left circle at 14:57 sapped the Hawks momentum.

Kyler Kleven delivered Waterloo’s final goal during a power play at 1:07 of the third period, making the score 6-4.  However, Daniyal Dzhaniyev stuffed in an odd-man chance at 12:46 of the third to produce the final tally in the high-scoring affair.

The Hawks travel to meet the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Steel on Saturday, capping a run of five consecutive road games.
