The Chicago Steel scored five second period goals to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-1 at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, Illinois on Saturday.
Waterloo won the opening period, with the lone goal coming from Wyatt Schingoethe at 14:08. The puck was poked away from Max Sasson but came right to Schingoethe in the slot, and he fired it past goalie Nick Haas. The Hawks tally came between successful first period penalty kills; on the night, Waterloo denied Chicago’s league-leading power play unit all seven times the Hawks were shorthanded.
Erik Middendorf scored the game-tying goal at 7:10 of the second period, putting back the rebound of Sean Farrell’s initial shot. The rest of Chicago’s offense came in the final seven minutes of the period. Defensemen Ian Moore and Luca Fantilli found the net at 13:04 and 15:17 respectively. Farrell had the last two goals, squeezing in a chance at 16:32 before capitalizing on a takeaway and breakaway just over two minutes later.
The teams stacked up 64 penalty minutes in penalties – including four misconducts – in the third period, but there was no more scored.
Haas earned the win with 25 saves as Chicago outshot Waterloo 34-26.
The result ends a sequence of five consecutive road games during which the Hawks were 1-4-0. Now Waterloo played seven straight at Young Arena beginning with a Tuesday night matchup versus the Omaha Lancers.
