All of the meaningful scoring in Friday’s game at Young Arena came from defensemen as the Dubuque Fighting Saints produced a 4-1 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks.
Two Dubuque blue-liners gave the Fighting Saints a first period lead and all the offense they would truly need. At 3:59, the puck lay in the Black Hawks crease, and Ian Pierce dashed to the net to jam it in. Waterloo had the game’s next ten shots on goal, but Max Burkholder made it 2-0 Dubuque on a blast from the left point at 13:31.
However, the Hawks’ top scoring defenseman, David Gucciardi, also found the net in the period. Ryan O’Hara came out of traffic near the Saints blue line and found Gucciardi trailing that play; Gucciardi put his shot from the left circle under the crossbar less than a minute after the Saints’ second goal.
There was no more scoring until the final minute of regulation. Kenny Connors put the puck into an open net with 60 seconds to go. The frustrated Hawks took a penalty at that stoppage, creating the circumstance for Robert Cronin to add a power play goal with 40.2 seconds remaining.
Recent Saints goaltending acquisition Lukas Parik won in his first appearance for Dubuque, stopping 30 shots as Waterloo earned a 31- 28 edge in chances.
The Black Hawks finish a run of seven consecutive home games next weekend on Friday and Saturday against the Fargo Force. Kids age 4-12 who are in attendance on Friday night will receive a free Waterloo Black Hawks youth jersey presented by SCHEELS and Christie Door Company. Friday’s game begins at 7:05 p.m.
