Tristan Broz scored twice Friday - including the eventual game-winning goal - in the Fargo Force’s 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks during the first of two games between the teams at Young Arena this weekend.
The Force scored twice from close range during the latter half of the opening period. Austin Wong knocked in a centering feed from the top of the crease during a delayed penalty situation at 13:01. A little more than four minutes later, the teams were skating four-on-four, but Fargo broke out on a two-on-one rush, with Wong feeding Broz to make it 2-0.
All the scoring in the second came on the margins of the period. Each side recorded a goal in the first minute. Broz notched his second just 18 seconds after intermission, putting Nick Strom’s cross-ice pass into an open side. However, Owen Ozar stole the puck behind the Fargo net, setting up Alex Gaffney in the slot 34 seconds later.
The Hawks navigated six minutes of shorthanded time in the middle of the period, then capitalized when they went to a late power play. With 57.3 seconds remaining before intermission, Luke Bast utilized a screen near the top of the crease, scoring in his first appearance since early December.
There was no tangible offense in the third. Waterloo’s best opportunity to tie the game came when Ozar was awarded a penalty shot at 10:53. However Brennan Boynton turned away that attempt as part of a 19-save performance for the win.
The Hawks and Force duel again at Young Arena on Saturday. Fans age 21 and older can enjoy two-for-one Miller Lite until the first intermission. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
