Waterloo Black Hawks’ netminder Emmett Croteau stopped more shots, but Brennan Boynton of the Fargo Force came away with the win during a 2-1 tilt at Young Arena Saturday.
Making just his second start, Croteau turned aside 33 of 35 chances, including 15 saves in the second period. Waterloo beat Boynton just once - tying the matchup for much of the middle period - however Boynton’s second win of the weekend came with saves on the other 25 Hawks shots.
The Force came away with the only goal of the first period just after a power play had ended. The visitors managed to stay onside in transition, leading to Kyle Smolen’s opportunity from the slot; Smolen’s shot hit the top corner at 10:35.
For the second consecutive night, Waterloo scored in the first minute of the second period. Fifty-seven seconds out of intermission, Michael LaStarza was persistent behind the Force goal, keeping the puck away until he could wrap it around the net from the post to the left of Boynton.
The 1-1 count held until 13:13. A long stretch in the Black Hawk zone eventually led to the go-ahead Fargo goal when Tristan Broz swept in the rebound of Trevor Griebel’s initial attempt.
The Force held off the Hawks during the third period, despite a 8-7 edge in Waterloo chances. The cleanly-played game included just three power plays: two for Fargo and one for Waterloo. The Force also prevailed Friday by producing a scoreless third period, winning the opening game of the weekend 3-2.
The Hawks go on the road next Friday to visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints. It will be Waterloo’s first road game since mid-January.
