Postgame Recap: Storm Stop Hawks Sunday

By WBH, 02/14/21, 6:00PM CST

Hawks Blanked for the First Time Since Dec. 4

Connor Hopkins stopped 25 Waterloo Black Hawks shots Sunday at Young Arena, helping the Tri-City Storm to a 2-0 win.

The perfect performance by the 20-year-old came one night after Hopkins allowed four goals on 11 shots during a relief appearance for injured starter Todd Scott.  Hopkins delivered 14 of his saves in the third period as Waterloo more than doubled the number of chances they had produced in the first 40 minutes.

The Storm took their initial lead during a delayed penalty situation at 11:38 of the first period.  As the puck found Adam Klapka in the slot, Tri-City defenseman Guillaume Richard knocked down Hawks goalie Jack Williams in the crease.  Klapka put the puck into the net, and it was ruled a good goal.

The 1-0 score held until the Storm added an insurance goal at 17:34 of the second.  Kieran Cebrian avoided the Waterloo defense, going from the right wing boards behind the goal and out the other side.  Cebrian handed the puck off to Nicholas Donato, who took a couple of strides parallel to the goal line before lifting a sharp angle chance over Williams.

Waterloo’s netminder made 28 saves in his first appearance since December 18th.

The Hawks’ next game is on the road Friday in Omaha.  Waterloo will also meet the Lancers next Sunday at Young Arena.
