A season-high three first period goals were not enough to propel the Waterloo Black Hawks to their desired end result on Friday, and the Omaha Lancers rallied for a 5-4 decision at Ralston Arena.
Waterloo jumped ahead just 30 second into the game. Wyatt Schingoethe was handling the puck near the side of the goal and slipped a pass to Ryan O’Hara, who swept it into the net as he was falling to the ice. Owen Ozar added to the lead six minutes later, capitalizing on a two-on-one rush with a shot from the right circle.
Exactly one minute after that, Omaha converted a power play when Ayrton Martino chopped the puck in from the top of the crease. However, Schingoethe extended the lead again when he let go of a quick shot from inside the right dot at 13:46. The Lancers made it a 3-2 game at intermission as T.J. Schweighardt used traffic at the front of the net to score at 15:51.
Shortly after the Hawks’ first power play of the night, the Lancers tied the game in the second. Kyle Bettens was serving the penalty time and came out of the box to carry the puck up the ice, setting up Owen Fowler for an equalizer at 8:47.
The Hawks scored in transition to retake the lead at 12:33. Michael LaStarza was a stride behind Casey Severo when he left the puck near the top of the right circle, and LaStarza sent his shot under the crossbar. However, Omaha Defenseman Ryan Conroy produced the last goal before intermission, going to the net to finish Ryan Lautenbach’s pass for a 4-4 score at 16:09.
The only goal of the third proved to be the game-winner at 10:47. Nolan Renwick was positioned near the front of the Waterloo net and tipped a Matt Basgall shot past Charlie Glockner to break the tie.
Glockner made 24 saves in the loss, while Jakub Dobes made 31 stops for Omaha. Waterloo outshot the Lancers 35-29.
The Hawks and Lancers will meet again on Sunday afternoon at Young Arena, but tomorrow night, Waterloo visits the Des Moines Buccaneers. That game at Buccaneer Arena starts at 6 o’clock.
