Postgame Recap: Hawks’ Comeback Tantalizingly Close

By WBH, 03/09/21, 10:15PM CST

Third Period Thrilling, Unsatisfying

The Waterloo Black Hawks erased most of a four-goal deficit on Tuesday but came up just short against the Omaha Lancers in a 4-3 decision at Young Arena.

Waterloo trailed 4-0 when the teams emerged from the locker room after the second intermission, and the score was unchanged after two minutes on a period-opening power play.  The Hawks’ breakthrough came at 4:12 when Luke Bast connected with Matt Argentina on a diagonal pass from the side of the net to the left circle; Argentina snapped in his third goal in as many games.

The 4-1 score held until 17:15.  Nick Wallace carried the puck from beside his net to just inside the Lancer blue line, then connected with Owen Ozar on right wing.  Ozar found the target for his team-leading 11th goal of the year.

The Hawks final goal came with 1:41 to play.  An extra attacker was on the ice when Cooper Wylie pushed a pass across the top of the crease to Wyatt Schingeothe; he beat Jakub Dobes as the big goaltender tried to go from right to left.

Despite lifting their netminder again and going to a late power play, Waterloo was unable to level the score.  The Hawks outshot Omaha 12-10 in the final period, but the Lancers finished with a 32-30 edge for the night.

Omaha had broken open a scoreless game eight minutes into the second period.  Back-and-forth passing between Ayrton Martino and Zach Dubinsky led to Martino’s score from the left hashmark at 7:58.  The same two players were involved in a power play conversion at 12:42, with Dubinsky hitting the top corner of the net from the left circle.  Just 24 seconds after that, Owen Fowler tapped the puck into an open side following a rush.  The Lancers’ fourth goal of the period came from Nolan Renwick after a takeaway in the Hawks’ zone at 17:39.

Dobes picked up his fourth win against Waterloo with 27 saves.

The Black Hawks go on the road for their next game this Friday versus the Lincoln Stars.
