Postgame Recap: Hawks Fall 7-2 to Dubuque

By WBH, 03/27/21, 9:15PM CDT

Go on the Road Sunday to Finish the Weekend

A four-goal Dubuque Fighting Saints first period was enough to put the visitors permanently ahead of the Waterloo Black Hawks during a 7-2 decision at Young Arena Saturday.

The key moments that allowed Dubuque to take over were in the final minute before the first intermission.  Already ahead 2-1, the Saints scored twice in 15.2 seconds.  With 35.1 remaining, Daniyal Dzhaniyev scored from the left circle off a turnover.  Primo Self followed up with 19.9 to go, batting a puck out of midair from nearly the same spot after Henry Thrun’s dump-in took a wild hop skyward from the area where the glass and boards meet behind the Hawks net.

Most of the second period was played with a 4-2 score thanks to a shorthanded Waterloo goal at 6:43.  Michael LaStarza carried the puck across the blue line on left wing and found Mason Reiners trailing the play.  Reiners gave the puck back to LaStarza in the right circle, and he squeezed a shot between Lukas Parik and the post to his left.

Dubuque went back ahead by three shortly before the period ended with their second power play goal of the night; Robert Cronin was left with a tap-in chance at 18:24.  Tristan Lemyre and Matt Savoie added goals in transition during the last seven-and-a-half minutes of the third, extending the final margin.

In the opening frame, a power play score from Andrei Buyalsky at 5:01 had started the scoring.  Charlie Strobel answered for the Hawks 38 seconds later when a Dubuque defender fell down in front of him at the blue line, giving Strobel room to cross into the zone and send a low shot through Parik’s pads.

Cronin scored the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1 Dubuque at 14:27.

The Hawks wrap up their three-game weekend on Sunday versus the Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center, starting at 5:05 p.m.
