Defenseman Dealt to Third Team During NHL Career

Former Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman and 2013/14 USHL Player of the Year Brandon Montour has been traded to the Florida Panthers from the Buffalo Sabres, the teams announced Saturday.

Montour made his NHL debut with the Anaheim Ducks in 2016, slightly more than two years after his final game in Waterloo.  Anaheim had selected him during the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft following the defenseman’s 2013/14 exploits with the Hawks, which included 62 points, far exceeding all other USHL blue liners and ranking 9th overall in the league.  Montour completed his time in Waterloo with 77 regular season appearances, 20 goals, 63 assists, and the league Defenseman of the Year Award in 2013/14, as well as Player of the Year honors as the Hawks claimed the Anderson Cup.  He also skated in 12 Clark Cup playoff games with 16 points.

Details about Saturday’s trade from nhl.com/panthers:

"Brandon is a capable and talented right-shot defenseman who will have an immediate impact on our club," said [Panthers General Manager Bill] Zito. "His two-way acumen and ability to play important minutes make him an exciting addition to the Panthers."

Montour, 26, appeared in 38 games with Buffalo this season, recording 14 points (5-9-14). The 6-foot, 194-pound native of Brantford, Ontario, led all Buffalo defensemen in goals (5), even-strength points (11), shorthanded points (2), while leading the team in blocked shots (53) and total even-strength time on ice (704:51).

Originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round (55th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Montour has appeared in 281 career NHL games for Buffalo (2018-19 to 2020-21) and Anaheim (2016-17 to 2017-18), amassing 105 points (29-76-105).

Just eight days ago, Florida traded former Black Hawk Vinnie Hinostroza to the Chicago Blackhawks.  Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Jacob MacDonald have also both skated for the Panthers earlier in their pro hockey careers.  Montour, Hinostroza, and MacDonald are among 12 Waterloo alumni who have skated in at least one NHL game this season.
