Three Third Period Goals Push Waterloo to Win

Nicholas Ahern’s power play goal broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Waterloo Black Hawks to an eventual 4-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm Saturday during a preseason matchup at Tyson Event Center in Sioux City.

Ahearn’s score 4:08 into the final frame was Waterloo’s second power play goal of the afternoon.  John Waldron had produced the first tally of the game during an advantage at 6:07 of the second period.  Tri-City tied the contest less than a minute later, then took the lead on a shorthanded marker with five minutes remaining before intermission.

The Hawks’ James Hong re-tied the affair at 2:58 of the third, just more than a minute before Ahern swung Waterloo in front.  Owen Baker added an insurance goal at 8:45.

In the final period, the Hawks outshot the Storm 12-6, leading to a final count of 25 chances to 20.  Goaltender Jack Williams earned the victory with 18 saves.

The Hawks remain in Sioux City for a 3 p.m. contest Sunday against the Fargo Force.
