In celebration of the 60th season of hockey in the Cedar Valley, the Waterloo Black Hawks and SingleSpeed Brewing Company announced the release of “Season Sixty” Thursday, available soon at SingleSpeed’s Waterloo Taproom, Young Arena, and select retailers.
SingleSpeed crafted the refreshing 4.4% ABV brew with a unique new recipe and an eye toward making it a flavorful addition on game night. Months ago, the SingleSpeed Brewing team secretly went to work on the project. They describe what came out of their fermentation tanks as a “dry-hopped pale lager…crafted with pre-game, mid-game, and post-game enjoyment in mind.” Season Sixty’s first availability will be during SingleSpeed’s “Tip The Cow Day 2022” event this Saturday at their Waterloo Taproom.
“The Waterloo Black Hawks have a special heritage in the community that is worth celebrating, and this is the way we celebrate,” said SingleSpeed Founder and Brewer Dave Morgan. “I was excited about this idea as soon as it came up, and it is great to work with our neighbors to see it officially become a reality today.”
Thursday’s announcement is the latest collaboration between the team and the brewery in a relationship which began shortly after SingleSpeed repurposed and renovated a historic downtown Wonder bread facility just a block away from Young Arena. SingleSpeed varieties are the official tap beer at Black Hawks games, and the brewery has sponsored the SingleSpeed Luxury Suite at the rink since that special group area was opened in 2017 following an arena upgrade.
“When you’ve got a great partner, you can take a somewhat spontaneous idea and make it into a moment like we are having right now,” said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “I want to thank Dave and his team for their enthusiasm, and I’m really looking forward to January 22nd, when Season Sixty will be available during a Black Hawks home game for the first time.”
The Hawks host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, January 22nd and 6:05 p.m. Beer stands throughout the rink will stock 12-ounce cans of Season Sixty for those age 21 and over at a debut price of $4 each (regularly $5).
“Black Hawks games are one of the great things about downtown Waterloo. I’m excited that our Taproom has been an attraction bringing people downtown for nearly five years now. There’s a lot happening here. The future is very promising, so I hope lots of people will come to see a game, stop at SingleSpeed before or after, and enjoy what our community has to offer during this special hockey season, and for many years to come,” said Morgan.
Season Sixty will also be available to Black Hawks fans and beer lovers at Cedar Valley Hy-Vee locations and Happy’s Wine and Spirits in Cedar Falls. As a commemorative recipe, Season Sixty was produced in limited quantities, so it will be available only while supplies last.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize Fahr Beverage of Waterloo for their help in making today’s announcement possible. Thank you, Fahr, for your role in this collaboration and your support through so many of our 60 seasons,” said Greene.
In addition to the arrival of the new Pilsner, the Black Hawks’ Party Town Outfitters shop and the SingleSpeed Taproom will also offer an exclusive line of Season Sixty apparel and merchandise.
