First of Three Straight on the Road for Hawks

Home ice remained pivotal in the head-to-head series between the Waterloo Black Hawks and Des Moines Buccaneers; skating a Buccaneer Arena on Friday, Des Moines came out on top 4-1.

Dating back to last season, it was the sixth consecutive matchup won by the team playing in front of the local fans.

Killian Kiecker-Olson recorded the opening goal for Des Moines at 13:07 of the first, capitalizing from just beyond the top of the crease on Andrew Kuzma’s setup originating behind the goal.  The Buccaneers added another at 17:27 when Paul Davey sped into the offensive zone and put a low shot from the left circle under Jack Williams.

After a scoreless second, the Hawks had a key opportunity to change the complexion of the game early in the third.  Six seconds into a five-on-three advantage, Garrett Schifsky tipped in Ben Robertson’s shot from the left point, making the score 2-1 with 15:34 left in regulation.

However, Waterloo was unable to make anything of the remaining power play time; instead, Des Moines scored on their next special teams opportunity at 11:03 when Scout Truman hit the net with a low chance from the left dot.

One last special teams situation did not change the Hawks’ fortunes.  Connor Pelc was given a five-minute major for kneeing John Waldron with six-and-a-half minutes remaining.  Waterloo could not cut into the deficit before an offsetting penalty ended the power play prematurely.  Jackson Dorrington capped the evening with an empty-netter for Des Moines at 18:34.

The Hawks go from Friday’s game in central Iowa to the eastern edge of the state Saturday to visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints at 7:05 p.m.
