Fust, McCormick Score for Hawks

The Omaha Lancers claimed the first of two weekend meetings against the Waterloo Black Hawks, pulling away to a 5-2 Saturday decision at Young Arena.

The game was tied going to the third, and the Hawks survived 1:28 spent two-men shorthanded, but the period went downhill from there.  At 9:45, Chris Hedden’s shot from the left point was deflected in the left circle by Morgan Winters; it had eyes, floating upward before diving into the goal.  That was Winters’ second of the night.  On the next shift, Evan Werner struck for a second time, firing in a shot after speeding into the offensive end on right wing.

Waterloo could not draw closer during a late power play, and Cam Mitchell sealed the outcome with an empty net goal as 1:01 remained.

Omaha had opened the scoring following an early first period faceoff in the Waterloo zone.  At 3:55, the puck came to Winters on the inside edge of the left circle; Winters’ shot deflected up over the right shoulder of Jakub Tichy, arcing under the crossbar.

Big Black Hawks at the front of the Lancer net gave Waterloo the opportunities they needed to swing ahead before intermission.  During a power play at 8:29, Ray Fust screened goalie Thomas Heaney and redirected Garrett Schifsky’s shot from above the right faceoff dot.  Then Mason McCormick put Waterloo ahead at 15:34, scooping in the rebound of a blast by Patrick Geary.

Like their first goal - as well as the eventual game-winner - it was a fluttering changeup that allowed Omaha to tie the game in the second period.  At 2:47, Mitchell’s faceoff win came back to Werner who flipped the puck from the right circle into the opposite top corner of the net.

The Hawks and Lancers get together for an instant rematch Sunday at Omaha’s Ralston Arena, with a 4:05 opening puck drop.
