Postgame Recap: Hawks Fall as Lancers Climb

By WBH, 03/13/22, 7:00PM CDT

Robertson Scores Late for Waterloo

The Omaha Lancers downed the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-1 Sunday at Ralston Arena, and the result allowed Omaha to move into third place in the USHL Western Conference.

The Lancers slipped past the idle Lincoln Stars.  The Black Hawks trail the Stars by a dozen points and hold fifth place by just two over the Fargo Force.

Omaha converted the only power play during the first two periods, recording the afternoon’s first goal at 3:13 of the second.  Evan Werner’s shot from the left circle led to a rebound poked in by Cade Ahrenholz.  Then at 9:36, Werner forced a turnover near the Omaha line.  The puck slid into the Black Hawks zone with Emmett Croteau and Werner getting to it simultaneously near the top of the circles.  Werner got enough contact to poke it past the Waterloo goalie, then with the net open, scored on a follow-up touch.

The Hawks’ first power play of the game began with under five minutes to play.  It was unsuccessful, but another, which began with 2:07 left, yielded Waterloo’s lone goal.  Ben Robertson fired a shot from the right point, which was redirected down off the ice, bouncing up past goalie Kevin Pasche.

It was the second time in less than two weeks that the Hawks have broken up a Pasche shutout bid in the late minutes of a game, though Waterloo could not level the score.  Instead, with 12.1 seconds to go, Jared Wright flipped the puck into Waterloo’s empty net.

The 3-1 final matched a game the teams played at Ralston Arena on March 1st.

Sunday, the Hawks and Lancers grappled for just 10 combined shots on goal in the third period.  Omaha outshot Waterloo by a final count of 26-23.
