Postgame Recap: Goaltending Duel Goes to Croteau

By WBH, 05/01/22, 6:15PM CDT

Series Now Tied at 1-1

Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Emmett Croteau won for the third time this postseason, stopping 24 Sioux City Musketeers shots Sunday in a 2-1 victory at Tyson Events Center.

The result forces a third game in the series.  Sioux City had won Game One Saturday, 3-1, behind Alex Tracy’s 28 saves.  The two netminders opposed each other again Sunday, with Croteau making his finest stops in sequence on a rush by Owen McLaughlin early in the third.  Croteau denied McLaughlin’s initial chance, then got enough of a follow-up to parry the opportunity wide off the post.

Sioux City outshot Waterloo 25-18.

One of the Musketeers’ earliest attempts was the only one to find the net.  Two penalties against the Black Hawks less than two minutes into the game provided the five-on-three opportunity that Sioux City used to take an early lead.  At 1:26, Ben Steeves scored on a low shot from the right circle.

Waterloo tied the game at 9:52.  Ray Fust’s steal behind the Sioux City goal allowed him to come to the top of the crease with the puck, where he beat Alex Tracy with an unassisted backhander.

At 16:05 of the second period the Hawks went to the lead, with what proved to be the final goal of the matchup.  Ninety seconds of five-on-three power play time had just ended, but before the Musketeers came back to full strength, Tucker Ness fired in the go-ahead goal from the inside edge of the right circle.

The Black Hawks’ Sunday win extends the series to a third and decisive game on Tuesday night.  The winner of that 7:05 p.m. contest will advance to the Clark Cup Western Conference Final.
