Forward Gavin Lindberg became the 21st member of the 2021/22 Waterloo Black Hawks to announce his NCAA commitment, naming Colorado College as his future school in a social media post on Monday morning.
The 18-year-old was with the Black Hawks for the final six weeks of the regular season and made his junior hockey debut during a March 18th game against the Tri-City Storm. Lindberg skated in 13 games before the schedule ended, recording his first USHL goal on April 8th during a 4-3 shootout win against the Fargo Force. He also had one regular season assist.
“Gavin was a timely addition to our lineup, and you really saw what he was capable of as he got comfortable in the playoffs,” said Black Hawks Head Coach Matt Smaby. “We look forward to having a full year with Gavin on the ice, and we are excited to celebrate this moment with him today."
During an opening round USHL Clark Cup playoff series versus the Lincoln Stars, Lindberg scored goals in each Black Hawks victory. He tallied a go-ahead goal late in the first period of Game Two; Waterloo led the rest of the way during that 3-2 contest. Then in Game Three, Lindberg notched the first of the Hawks’ three third period goals as Waterloo rallied to a series-clinching 5-4 overtime win. Adding an assist against the Sioux City Musketeers in the next round, Lindberg was responsible for three total points in six postseason games.
Serving as captain for the Moorhead High School squad during 2021/22, Lindberg had helped the Spuds reach Minnesota’s AA State Tournament. Individually, he recorded 23 goals and 46 assists in 31 games and was one of 10 finalists for the state’s “Mr. Hockey” award.
Lindberg’s path from Minnesota to Waterloo to Colorado Springs mirrors that of forward Ben Copeland, the most recent former Hawk to skate for the Tigers. During Copeland’s final season in the Colorado College program (2020/21), he ranked second in scoring for the squad.
The Black Hawks’ 2022/23 schedule will be revealed later this summer. Season tickets for the fall are currently available from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
