Joel Farabee scored with 9.7 seconds remaining in regulation Friday, and the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18s slipped passed the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-3, at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
Farabee’s winner on a scramble in the netmouth was the fourth consecutive tally for the home team after Waterloo had pulled ahead to a 3-0 edge.
The third period began with the Hawks in front, 3-1. Waterloo was unable to build the lead during a five minute power play, and the U-18s cut the margin to one when Oliver Wahlstrom’s partially stopped shot caromed into the net off a defender’s skate at 7:48. Brady Tkachuk recorded the equalizer at 14:21 during a power play, redirecting David Farrance’s point shot.
In the first period, the U18s thought they had scored the first goal of the night at 13:47. However, after a discussion by the officials, it was ruled that the puck had been played by a high stick. The game went to intermission scoreless with each team recording only seven shots on goal.
Nick Swaney broke the seal on the net at 7:48 of the second period. Emil Ohrvall forced a turnover and setup Swaney’s one-on-one look against goalie Dylan St. Cyr; the Hawks’ leading scorer went from forehand to backhand before lifting his shot under the crossbar.
It was the first of three goals in less than five minutes. Mikey Anderson struck from the top of the left circle at 10:32 as traffic near the front of the net limited St. Cyr’s view. Ben Copeland added another at 12:38, dashing to the net to jab in a centering pass out of the right corner from Bailey Conger.
However, with less than 23 seconds remaining before intermission, Grant Mismash backed down the Waterloo defense, snapping a wrister past Peter Thome, starting the comeback.
The Hawks and National Team Development Program U-18s meet for an instant rematch on Saturday. The puck drop at USA Hockey Arena will be 6 p.m. Central Time.
