Memory is a fickle thing…just ask anyone who has ever heard a “fish story.”
The listener who is paying close attention will often notice that with each retelling, the catch gets bigger. Left unchallenged, some storytelling anglers would eventually be claiming to have pulled a blue marlin out of the Cedar River.
The same might be noticed about recollections of the “good old days” at McElroy Auditorium. As some like to remember it, 50 cent beer was a staple for every game, tickets were less than a dollar, and 10,000 fans came out every night.
(Editor’s Note: McElroy’s hockey seating capacity was between 5,000 and 6,000).
If you hear a story along those lines about hockey in Waterloo, drive to Scheels to buy that person a rod, reel, and hip-waders to match their malarkey.
The Waterloo Black Hawks can’t recreate up the past – especially the embellished past – but the team is looking forward to offering fans new and affordable food and concession specials in the future at Young Arena.
A new lease between the team and the City of Waterloo was formally approved this week. Key components include improved collaboration, plus a new distribution of responsibilities. For the first time, the Black Hawks will sell all alcoholic beverages; meanwhile, Young Arena staff will manage all food and soft drinks.
Here are some of the concepts in the works. Additional specifics – including game dates – will be released in the coming weeks.
Enjoy some of Young Arena’s favorite concession items along with four attack zone tickets for $48 during select games. The included food items will vary from game to game (including pizza, burgers and fries, hot dogs, or brats), so you’ll have the chance to try them all by the end of the season. Speaking of “chance,” Four Pack purchasers will also have four chances to win prizes during the second intermission, thanks to included chuck-a-pucks. And don’t forget, the Family Four Pack isn’t just for families. Bring along three coworkers, three neighbors, or three fishing buddies.
Whether you are lured by sweet or salty snacks, everyone who comes out for Black Hawks hockey will have the opportunity to find something they like during these games. For those with a sweet tooth, look for nights featuring discounted ice cream, mini donuts, and soda. If you like a savory treat, you’ll find other games where the offer focuses on pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, and peanuts.
Ice cold beer is a Party Town staple. During several games in the coming 2017/18 season, the Black Hawks will offer special prices on favorite beers for those 21 and over. Keep an eye on waterlooblackhawks.com to find out which beers are featured and to make sure you don’t miss these games. Better yet, share your email address for regular updates or follow the team on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to keep up with all of the latest game details.
Back by popular demand, the Black Hawks will offer special “Beer Tours” in 2017/18. If $2 Beer Nights are your opportunity to enjoy your favorite beverage, then the Beer Tour provides a chance to sample a variety of new favorites. Your samples and game ticket are wrapped into one package.
So during 2017/18, you’ll be able to bring your fish story-telling friend to the rink and take advantage of these great specials together. And prepare yourself: you may also be regaled with tales of walking uphill both ways, barefoot in the snow to bring home a loaf of bread which cost a nickel.
