The 2017/18 Waterloo Black Hawks will have their first chance to skate at Young Arena near the beginning of August. Fans can sneak a peek at the team as it forms for the coming season while also doing a good deed for students in Waterloo schools.
A pair of orientation camp inter-squad scrimmages will be open to the public on Thursday, August 3rd at 8:15 p.m. and Friday, August 4th at 6 p.m. There is no charge to attend. Since 2015, the Black Hawks have conducted a school supply drive in lieu of admission, encouraging those who come to the rink to bring classroom materials to be distributed by the Waterloo Community School District.
“From the first to the second year, our fans grew this effort dramatically,” said Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene. “For 2017, we want to take this to the next level and see if we can collect enough gear to take care of an entire school. It’s a lofty goal, but I bet Black Hawks fans can do it.”
In 2016, 6,017 crayons, colored pencils, or markers were gathered during the scrimmage, along with over 30,000 pages of notebook paper, plus hundreds of pens, erasers, and other items. In order to provide for every student at George Washington Carver Academy this year, the Hawks are hoping to round up:
• 6,420 black or blue ballpoint pens
• 4,280 pocket folders and spiral notebooks
• 2,140 glue sticks
• 1,605 highlighters
• 1,070 packages of loose leaf paper and composition books
• 535 medium three-ring binders, packages of markers, packages of colored pencils, and earbuds
All fans making a contribution to the school supply drive will receive a $2 off coupon for Black Hawks home 2017 preseason games or 2017/18 regular season games played at Young Arena during the month of October. The United States Hockey League schedule for the coming season and details about exhibition home games will be released separately at a later date.
Season tickets for the 2017/18 are available for as little as $29 per month. For more information, contact the Black Hawks’ front office at (319) 232-3444.
