Four unanswered goals lifted the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Des Moines Buccaneers, 4-1, Saturday in a preseason matchup at Buccaneer Arena. It was a follow up to the Hawks’ 3-0 Friday victory.
Bobby Trivigno delivered the winner, and Jack Drury contributed a goal and an assist during the decisive third period, which began with a 1-1 score. During a four-on-four sequence, Trivigno flipped in a chance with Jake Kucharski down at 5:30.
Drury set up Matej Blumel streaking up ice to cash in on a two-on-one less than four minutes later. While matched up four-skaters-a-side again at 16:00, Drury sealed the win with his finish.
The Bucs had recorded the only goal in the first period during the closing seconds of a power play at 14:17. Nico Appendino set up Scooter Brickey in the high slot, and the veteran defenseman’s one-timer flew between the pipes.
During the second period, Waterloo answered in similar fashion, with nine seconds remaining during a power play. Kyle Koopman’s shot from the left point deflected up off the stick of a Buccaneer defender and over the shoulder of Kucharski at 7:02. The equalizer came after the Hawks had killed more than a minute of five-on-three shorthanded time earlier in the period.
Jared Moe made 24 saves for the win.
Waterloo’s preseason schedule continues Friday at home against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $10.
