Copeland, Goalies Star in WIn

Matej Tomek and Jared Moe combined to make 21 saves during a 4-0 Waterloo Black Hawks preseason shutout of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Young Arena Friday.

The Black Hawks had the first six shots on goal during the game, including Ben Copeland’s go-ahead score at 6:29 of the first period.  Speeding up the right wing just seconds after a power play had ended, Copeland cut through the circle and moved to his backhand to slip a shot past goalie Connor Murphy.  During the last 9 minutes before intermission, Cedar Rapids tested Tomek six times, but the game went to intermission 1-0, with Waterloo holding a 7-6 shots advantage.

Waterloo extended the margin with the only goal of the second at 4:55.  Hank Sorensen’s shot from the left point created a rebound in the slot; Ethan Johnson cashed in, flipping the puck under the crossbar.  Both starting goalies departed in the second period, Murphy after stopping 11 of 13 shots and Tomek with 10 saves.

The Hawks struck for two more in the first seven minutes of the third.  Just 25 seconds out of the intermission, Ethan DeStefani stepped into the left circle and clanked a shot in off the opposite post.

Copeland scored his second of the game, shorthanded, as the Black Hawk penalty was still being announced.  Swiping the puck near the defensive blue line, he shook off back-checkers as he zipped up the ice before lifting his chance below the bar at 6:54.

Moe finished the game after entering the contest at 12:04 of the second period.  He stopped all 11 shots he faced.

The Hawks and RoughRiders meet for an instant rematch Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
