Busy Night for Hawks Goalies

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders evened a preseason home-and-home weekend series by topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 Saturday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

After scoring 25 seconds into the third period on Friday, the Hawks recorded a goal at the same mark during the opening shift of Saturday’s game.  With traffic in front of the RoughRider net, Hank Sorensen’s shot from the right point eluded Cedar Rapids netminder Jiri Patera.

The RoughRiders countered at 5:56 when Nathan Smith spiked in a diagonal pass down the slot from Sam Malinski.  During a power play three minutes later, Cedar Rapids went to the lead with a goal in transition by Marek Valach.

Another goal at 5:50 of the second put the RoughRiders ahead by two for much of the middle frame.  Smith’s second of the game came from close range on a setup from behind the net by Chase Blackmun.  However, with 1:08 remaining before intermission, Waterloo drew back within one.  Dylan Mills stepped around a defender to create an initial chance, and Ian Malcolmson flipped the rebound back between the pipes.

At 5:26 of the third, Smith completed his hat trick, coming off the right boards to swat in a backhander from the top of the crease.  Jakub Urbanek added an empty net goal to set the final score with 1:02 remaining.

The Hawks wrap up their exhibition schedule next week in Pittsburgh during the USHL Fall Classic.
