Veterans Lead the Way

Three third period goals put the Waterloo Black Hawks over the top for a 4-2 win during the 2017/18 season opener on the road against the Sioux Falls Stampede at Sanford Premier Center Saturday.

Waterloo had the best of it for much of the first period, but the Stampede struck for the only goal during the frame.  At 16:38, Corson Green lifted a shot from the right point over the shoulder of a screened Matej Tomek.

Ben Copeland leveled the count at 8:16 of the second period.  He steered through a check and off the left boards, stepping through the circle to beat Mikhail Berdin with a low shot along the ice.

Waterloo went to the lead for the first time 12 seconds into the third.  Starting the period on a power play, Jackson Cates moved to the net and knocked in the rebound of his own shot to send the visitors in front.  Sioux Falls tied it on a power play of their own at 5:45 as Nolan Walker picked the top corner after a series of cross-ice passes.

Garrett Wait gave Waterloo a new lead at 9:22.  Hank Sorensen led a rush up ice, creating a Bobby Trivigno shot.  When Berdin could not locate the loose puck, Wait slipped it in.  Garrett Klee added an empty net shorthanded goal with 58.1 seconds to go.

Tomek made 23 saves for the victory.

The Hawks return to the ice Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, opening a home-and-home series on the road at Mystique Ice Center.  Waterloo’s home opener is the following night at Young Arena during the rematch.
