Success on the Road

Two power play goals and another while skating four-a-side pushed the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 4-1 win against the Sioux City Musketeers on Friday at Tyson Events Center.

For good measure, Waterloo denied seven of eight Sioux City power plays.

Prior to Friday, the Black Hawks had not scored a first period goal during the young 2017/18 season.  That changed 5:48 into the game when Dylan Mills stuffed in a centering pass from Jack Drury during the closing seconds of the first Waterloo power play.  Hunter Lellig added to the lead at 13:16.  Stepping in from the right point, the Waterloo native sent a low shot past screened goalie Matt Jurusik while the teams skated four-on-four.

Another power play goal at 3:56 of the second period built the margin.  Hank Sorensen was in the slot near the top of the circles and fired in a low chance.  The only five-on-five goal of the game was tallied at 15:16.  Ben Copeland found Ethan Johnson streaking into the zone on right wing.  When the two connected on a pass, Johnson was left alone with Jurusik and flipped his chance to the back of the cage.

Sioux City finally broke through with 3:59 remaining in regulation while they had twice as many skaters on the ice.  During a two-man advantage, plus an extra attacker, Sampo Ranta sailed a shot between the pipes from the left circle.

Matej Tomek turned in 20 saves for the victory.

The Hawks continue their weekend in the Siouxland on Saturday visiting the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m.
