Postgame Recap: Hawks Outduel Musketeers in OT

By WBH, 11/03/17, 10:00PM CDT

First Overtime of the Season

Jackson Cates slipped in a game-winning shot 59 seconds into overtime, sending the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Sioux City Musketeers, 3-2 at Tyson Events Center Friday.

Cates received a handoff from Ethan Johnson on the right wing boards before stepping through the circle and slot to push his low chance across the goal line.

Bobby Trivigno had notched the opening goal of the game at 4:16 of the first period.  The forward redirected Hunter Lellig’s shot which originated from the right point.  Jack Drury also scored an assist on the play after moving the puck back to the line from behind the Sioux City net.

Waterloo’s lead lasted just over a period.  Sioux City tied the game at 5:02 of the second when Hayden Rowan flipped in a second chance from just outside the crease.  Solag Bakich had taken the initial shot which created the rebound.

In the third, Waterloo went to the lead again at 4:29.  Mason Palmer’s blast hit Trivigno and bounced across the slot to Garrett Wait.  The veteran fired it in.  However, just over a minute later, Randy Hernandez tied the game again, speeding up the rink in transition and burying a chance after navigating across the face of the goal.

The Hawks play the middle game of five straight on the road Saturday against the Fargo Force.
