Postgame Recap: Saints Stir Late for Comeback

Hawks Keep a Share of First with OT Point

Three goals in just over four minutes undid a night’s work by the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday during a 3-2 overtime loss at Mystique Ice Center against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

The Saint’s Quinn Preston started the rally and capped the spurt, finishing with two goals.  Dubuque trailed 2-0 until Preston found the net from a sharp angle on a rush up left wing at 16:17 of the third.  He ended the game with an overtime goal at the 25-second mark, beating Matej Tomek to the stick side from the left faceoff dot.

In between, the Saints tied the game with a power play goal at 18:22.  The Hawks had nearly completed a penalty kill when Dubuque got a close call on a puck which was ruled to have been kept onside at the blue line.  In short order, a pass to the slot led to a goal by Tyce Thompson, which brought the game back to even terms.

The result ended a six-game Dubuque losing streak.  Nonetheless, Waterloo has earned a point in eight consecutive games via either wins or overtime losses.

Jackson Cates had bagged the only goal during the opening 20 minutes thanks to brilliant puck control by Ben Copeland.  Coming on a change, Copeland caught the puck on the left boards, stepped behind the net, and moved all the way to the opposite wall.  His pass back across the ice was knocked in on one touch by Cates at 15:07.

At 10:53 of the second, Jack Drury built on the lead.  Sam Huff rushed up left wing and found Drury between the circles for the transition score.

With the completion of Friday’s game, the Black Hawks now have just two road games remaining during the regular season.  Waterloo is back on home ice Saturday versus the Sioux City Musketeers.  The 7:05 game on home ice is Panther Pride Night; students from the University of Northern Iowa and all other colleges will receive $9 game day tickets when showing their student ID at the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office.  To order seats, call (319) 291-7680.
