Hawks Win in Final Pre-Christmas Home Game

Five different Black Hawks scored to lift Waterloo past the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 5-2 at Young Arena on Saturday night.

The Hawks struck quickly for the opening goal just 1:22 into the game.  Ryan Drkulec came from behind the net, and – with his back still to the goal at the bottom of the left circle – he flicked a quick backhander to the opposite top corner.  However, the RoughRiders tied the game ten minutes later.  Nathan Smith sprang Liam Walsh on a partial breakaway from the Waterloo blue line, and Walsh lifted his try past Jared Moe’s glove.

For the second consecutive night, Wyatt Schingoethe provided the go-ahead goal to break a second period tie.  A Hank Sorensen blast bounced off the end glass, setting up an Emil Ohrvall attempt from the slot.  Ohrvall’s try was stopped but bounced to Schingoethe, who spun it back on net and past Brett Miller.

Waterloo added a shorthanded goal at 13:16.  Ohrvall sprang Matt Koopman on a breakaway, and Koopman went to his backhand to feather in a low shot past Miller.

Cedar Rapids opened the third period on a power play and made the most of it at 1:38.  Liam Walsh found the disk between the circle and the post to Moe’s left and squeezed in a shot from close range.

It wasn’t a one-goal game for long.  Koopman returned the favor to Ohrvall to help the Hawks reestablish a multigoal lead before the period was four minutes old.  Koopman went behind the net to force a turnover, feeding Ohrvall for a one-touch shot near the top of the crease.

A Waterloo power play conversion capped the scoring at 9:10.  Schingoethe eyed the net from the left faceoff dot, but made a pass instead of taking a shot.  Matt Cameron was waiting at the opposite post to knock in the pass, giving the Hawks their largest lead of the night.

Saturday’s game completed Waterloo’s pre-Christmas home schedule.  The Hawks go on the road next weekend to meet the Lincoln Stars and Madison Capitols.
