Power Play Flurry Helps Home Team

Jared Moe made 32 saves to lead the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 4-0 New Year’s Eve win versus the Madison Capitols Monday at Young Arena.

It was the first time this season that Waterloo has blanked an opponent.  For Moe, it was the third shutout of his USHL career.

The Black Hawks played a perfect special teams period during the opening 20 minutes, getting all the scoring they would need and more.  Waterloo took full advantage of a five-on-three power play beginning at 7:19.  Joe Cassetti redirected a shot from the slot past Joey Lamoreaux.  Just 27 seconds later, Waterloo was still on the power play when James Marooney beat Lamoreaux but hit the post.  Solag Bakich swooped in to knock the rebound across the goal line.

Bakich struck again on Waterloo’s third power play, flipping in a difficult spinning backhander in transition at 18:58.  Coupled with two successful penalty kills, Waterloo could not have fared better as the teams skated with uneven numbers.

Following a scoreless, even-strength second period, Waterloo’s power play success stalled early in the third when a second two-man advantage for 1:41 was denied.  However, the Hawks also stopped a final Madison power play to finish three-for-three on the penalty kill.

Madison outshot the Hawks in each of the final two periods, 11-7 and 13-12 respectively.  One of Moe’s best saves came in the final minute against Lucas Herrmann from just outside the crease to preserve the shutout.  For the game, the teams each ended up with 32 attempts on goal.

Cassetti’s second score of the night brought forth one last cheer with 0.1 seconds to go.  Swiping a pass just outside the Madison blue line, he fired it into a Capitols goal which had been vacant for over two minutes.

The Hawks start the month of January in Sioux Falls on Friday.  They then return home Saturday to host the Lincoln Stars on Star Wars Night.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
