A three-goal first period stirred the Tri-City Storm to a 5-2 win against the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday a Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska.
A promising start for the visitors belied the ultimate outcome. Just 2:45 into the game, the Black Hawks did what neither team could do in Friday’s matchup: score an even-strength goal. Waterloo capitalized on a three-on-one with Matej Blumel feeding Joe Cassetti across the slot for the tally.
Tri-City tied it 21 second later. Michael Colella was on the scoring end of a two-on-one. The Storm then took the lead at 6:01 when Brendan Furry cashed in from the left circle. Connor McMenamin added one more with just over three minutes left before intermission, opportunistically making the most of a puck which slipped from the right boards to the top of the crease.
After a scoreless second period, another odd-man rush brought the Hawks back within a goal at 1:01 of the third. This time, Cassetti capitalized from the right circle on Wyatt Schingoethe’s setup. It was the opposite way the passing had gone earlier in the game.
Waterloo stayed within one score for more than eight minutes, but Brendan Budy’s power play goal from a sharp angle at 9:33 deepened the hole. Filip Forsmark capped the night by redirecting a centering feed at 16:23.
Waterloo outshot the Storm in every period, but Isaiah Saville turned in 42 saves.
Tri-City took both weekend meetings between the team by three-goal margins. Friday, they came out on top 3-0.
The Hawks return home on Tuesday to host the Sioux City Musketeers and complete a five-game string versus opponents from the league’s Western Conference. The matchup with the Muskies features $2 pizza, hot dogs, and soda, and fans can claim one free kids ticket (12 and under) with each regularly priced adult ticket purchase.
