Postgame Recap: A Hat Trick of Hat Tricks

By WBH, 01/24/19, 10:00PM CST

One in October, Another in November, Now in January

Emil Ohrvall recorded his third hat trick of the season, and the Waterloo Black Hawks cut down the Omaha Lancers 5-1 Thursday night at Young Arena.

Ohrvall’s goals during Thursday’s game give him 20 this season, making him the second Hawk after Matej Blumel to reach the 20-goal threshold this winter.  The win moves Waterloo into sole possession of second place in the USHL Western Conference, breaking a tie with the Des Moines Buccaneers.

The Hawks lunged into the lead by capitalizing on their only first period power play.  At 12:55, James Marooney let go of a shot from the right point.  Joe Cassetti was between Marooney and the net, and deflected the disc past Akira Schmid.

In the second period, the teams saved all of their scoring for the final four minutes.  At 16:04, a faceoff came almost immediately to Ohrvall between the dot and the inside hashmark of the left circle.  Ohrvall wired his shot to the top corner over Schmid’s left shoulder.

Omaha’s Harrison Roy picked the same spot to score at the other end of the ice not quite two minutes later.  The third man in on a three-on-two rush, Roy scooted through the left circle before lifting his attempt past Logan Stein.  However, it was just 45 seconds before Ohrvall pushed the lead back to two; swiping the puck near the side of the net, he dodged Schmid’s pokecheck and stuffed in a try from the top of the crease.

Ohrvall finished the hat trick during a power play at 5:13 of the third.  His shot from the right circle went across the face of goal and inside the opposite post.  Jacob Bengtsson later notched his first USHL goal from the left point, through traffic, on a subsequent power play at 15:30.  For the night, Waterloo was three-for-six on the advantage.

Stein stopped 27 of 28 Lancer shots for the win.

After taking Friday off, the Black Hawks are right back Saturday for a Dupaco Cowbell Cup matchup against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  Standing room tickets are available for the matchup which begins at 7:05 p.m.  To order, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
